Abstract

Candida albicans is a normal fungal organism present in
the oral cavity that is commensal and is found in 40-80% of healthy
humans. However, under certain circumstances, it can become an
opportunistic pathogenic microorganisms. The inhibition of Candida
albicans can be treated with chemical drugs, although the use of herbal
medicinal plants presents a challenge. Carrageenan (Eucheuma
spinosum) is a natural ingredient that can be used as a medicinal and
antifungal agent due to its content of several secondary metabolite
compounds such as flavonoids, tannins, saponins and alkaloids.
However, the efficacy of carrageenan as an antifungal for the fungus
Candida albicans is not known for certain. Aims: The objective of this
study was to determine the organoleptic and antifungal properties of
carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash against the Candida albicans.
Methods: A series of organoleptic, pH, viscosity and antifungal tests
were conducted on a carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash against
Candida albicans, with concentrations of 0.5%, 1%, 2% and 4% as well
as a positive control using 200 mg ketoconazole and a negative control
using distilled water. This study was carried out using a questionnaire,
pH meter, Brookfield viscometer and paper discs. Results: The
carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash, comprising all formulations, was
found to be acceptable to all respondents. It displayed a stable pH and
viscosity, and no antifungal effect was observed in the carrageenan
hydrogel mouthwash against the inhibition zone of Candida albicans.
Conclusion: The carrageenan hydrogel mouthwash could be used as an
oral mouthwash by adding the other active component, which possesses
anticandidal activity.
